Due to Nicholas Tomihama's excellent books (I have all four of his books because he is Youtubes 'BackYard Bowyer' and an authority on weapon making) - I now have made 7 PVC bows. He teaches arrow building, bow making, building bow releases, how to make a hunting knife, building jigs for bow-making whether building in wood or PVC. He likely is the Father of PVC bow making. Imagine building a $7 - $10 bow that shoots as good as some $300.00 commercial bows. This guy has done the world of archery a great service and will, I predict start taking kids, dads and moms and grand-parents on an enjoyable and incredible family journey.
In this immensely practical book, Nicholas Tomihama shows, step by step, how to make a bow out of an ordinary piece of hardwood lumber, including: choosing the board; shaping the bow's the outline; "tillering" -- the heart of making a wood bow; and adding a glued-on handle and glued-on nock reinforcements. As a bonus (he calls it his "bonus track"), he even shows how to make a string and arrows for your new bow. I originally bought it because Tomihama was the first author who explained to me that a bow gets thinner or narrower toward its tips in order to spread the bending force evenly along the limb. You can read this part of the book, and many others, with Amazon's "Look Inside!" feature. Read the back cover. It is honest when it says "Easy to read and follow steps go down to even the smallest detail in the design and construction of basic archery bows."If you intend to build a wood bow, you may want to read other books, like The Traditional Bowyer's Bible (volumes 1 through 4). But you must read this one.
I love this book. When M and I first took up archery,I ordered it and it sat on a shelf for quite a while. I took it out and read it in one sitting on a whim and have read it at least three times since. M read it and immediately wanted to begin building bows. This author broke down the steps to easily understand and made you feel like you could do anything. I highly recommend this to any aspiring Bowyer or even DIY person.
I have watched many videos on traditional archery. Consequently I found this book very basic. Having said that I do think the author gets the point across concerning the basics of his subject matter. If one is expecting a very detailed discussion on traditional archery then this book would not be a good selection. Nicholas' videos are very informative also.
I've fallowed "Nick Here" for years and I think he's the best. This book is also the best of him about this subject. I'm very happy I bought it...
This book is a great simple introduction to making a wooden bow. Two simple bow designs are described. But, more importantly, the terminology of bowyers is introduced in a way such that it is easy to understand. An important note is to look in the glossary to see what some of the specialized terms mean, although just reading through the book, then reading the glossary, then re-reading the book works just as well. (It was what I did! -- I bought the book in the Kindle edition.)This introductory book is quite enough to be able to make a simple, inexpensive wooden bow at minimal expense using modern materials. After reading this book, a good next step is to read some of Saxton Pope's books, especially his books on Yahi Archery and Hunting with a Bow and Arrow, in which classical Indian methods for making a wooden bow are described. But, the use of non-traditional modern backing materials is undoubtedly in line with Ishi, the Indian who Pope learned traditional North American Indian archery from circa 1914. Even Ishi switched from using obsidian flakes to steel knives in making bows when he had the chance :-)
This is a great all around book for bow building beginners, or for someone like me who only has made PVC bows, and would like to try to make a wood bow. I gave it five stars because it is a information packed book, and it costs only six bucks. Also be sure to check out his YouTube channel, the Backyard Bowyer.
Bought it for my 12yr old. Its a little complicated for him, but he's thrilled to work on it. He'll definitely need my help thought. My opinion is that anyone under their mid-teens is going to need help making these bows.
